A Crowd for Honeys Sunday BrunchHoney’s Sit ‘n Eat may not be obscure, but this Northern Liberties’ standard offers an eclectic menu, rustic atmosphere and great service. Situated on the corner of North 4th and Brown Streets, Honey’s serves breakfast and lunch all day and bills itself as a blend of Jewish and Southern food. All I know is that it’s pretty damn good.

Sunday brunch at Honey’s Sit ‘n Eat seems to be some sort of an institution based on the crowd milling around outside the front door. As expected, there was an hour wait, so after giving our name to the hostess we wandered down the street to relax and have coffee at The Latte Lounge. After getting to know Lila (a Bernese Mountain Dog) and her owner, we took a walk through the neighborhood before returning to Honey’s.

Brisket OmeleteThe Hostess called our name and we were ushered to our inside table. While we could’ve been seated at one of the sidewalk tables, the hot sun and the hungry gazes of the queue would have made a comfortable, relaxed meal more difficult. Honey’s dining room is comfortably spacious with close-knit tables, exposed metal beams and a casual “countryana” theme. Keeping with its diner vibe, there’ s also a counter with stools for those so inclined.Fried Green Tomatoes, Yum!

The menu is packed with variety and everyone should find something that they’ll enjoy. That includes some vegetarian and vegan options, too. Some of the more interesting-sounding items include:

  • Vegetarian Country Fried Steak with Gravy
  • Granny Smith Apple Omelete with ham and smoked, local cheddar cheese
  • Crispy Sesame Calamari Salad
  • BBQ Chipotle Mahi Mahi Tacos

For our brunch we chose the following:

Fried Green Tomatoes with Homemade Ranch dressing

Brisket Omelet with caramelized onion, spinach, tomato and raw milk cheddar cheese, Challa Toast & Potato Latke

Roasted Veggie w/Fennel Omelet with eggplant, tomatoes, onion and Boursin cheese , Challa Toast & Potato Latke

Pumpkin Pancakes with orange cinnamon butter and maple syrup

Eggs Benedict with Potato Latke

Pumpkin Pancakes with Cinnamon ButterEveryone in our group enjoyed our meal and we couldn’t pick one item that stood “head and shoulders” above the rest. They were all very good. The Fried Green Tomatoes were a real treat with a fine cornmeal crunch, while the Pumpkin Pancakes were also simplistically good. All were well prepared using fresh ingredients and provided large portions.

Roasted Veggie Omelet with FennelOur brunch at Honey’s Sit ‘n Eat definitely lived up to its billing. I’ve heard good reviews about this place for sometime and even found that it ranks among the best breakfast places in the city according to AOL’s City Guide (Check out AOL City Guide’s Best Breakfast Places in Philadelphia here). Furthermore, they hook you with “Southern Jewish food” and then back it up with a great meal.
