Mustard Green's Chinese RestaurantLooking for some fresh, delicately flavored Chinese food in Philly? Queen Village’s Mustard Greens just may fit the bill. Located on 2nd Street, Mustard Greens offers a clean, contemporary atmosphere just steps away from the hustle and bustle of South Street.

On a recent Friday evening, three of us were looking for a quick, unplanned meal when we thought of Mustard Greens. Although parking in the area can sometimes be difficult, luck presented us with a spot just steps from the front door.

Sauteed Mustard GreensEntering the restaurant, we found a fresh and modern dining room alight with candles. We were warmly greeted and immediately ushered to our table within the spacious dining room, which contained several parties at various points in their meals. As we were handed menus, a quick look around gave me the impression that we had made a good choice: nice atmosphere, friendly staff and an easily understandable menu. The fact that Mustard Greens has a bar is a bonus.

Steamed SkateUsed to Chinese restaurant menus with seemingly hundreds of items that include cryptic food descriptions, like “fish in brown sauce,” we found that Mustard Greens offers a scaled down menu plus a few daily specials. You can see Mustard Greens’ menu here. For our meal, we chose:

Shanghai Style Spring Rolls - Served as an appetizer, these Spring Rolls were among the best we’ve had. The wrapper was thin and the stuffing included bean sprouts, minced mushroom and morsels of chicken garnished with scallions.

Softshell Crabs - Offered as a nightly special, the crabs were chopped in pieces and then lightly fried in a tempura batter. Accompanying the dish was a light chili & vinegar sauce.

Steamed Skate - Also a nightly special, the Skate was presented in a pool of ginger soy sauce featuring scallions and caramelized garlic. The garnish of sugar snap peas and baby corn added to the presentation.

Sauteed Mustard Greens - A delicious side vegetable, the Greens were blanched and then perfectly saueed with garlic. Nuthin’ fancy, but really good.

Fried Rice with Vegetables - Thin egg noodles with diced vegetables and egg with a subtle hint of soy.

Living up to my initial expectation, our meal at Mustard Greens was very good. The food proved to be light and delicately flavored, versus the heavy, cornstarch-laden sauces commonly found at your local takeout shop. The service was friendly and attentive, while the entire meal cost approximately $22 per person (including tip). We enjoyed our experience at Mustard Greens and we look forward to going back.
